Braces
Dental braces are orthodontic devices that straighten crooked, gapped, rotated or crowded teeth with metal brackets and wires. They can help realign a person’s jaw to improve functions like chewing and speaking. Metal braces use stainless steel bands, brackets and wires to gently shift your teeth over time. The brackets are bonded (glued) on each tooth, then a thin flexible arch wire is placed over the brackets. Tiny elastic bands called ligatures keep the wire firmly in place.
The length of time for having braces depends on the severity of misalignment. Some people finish treatment in under 12 months. Others may need as long as three years or more to complete treatment. Regular dental checkups are required to ensure the braces treatment is on the right path. The dentist will advise how often visits are necessary depending on your case specifically.
Anyone who has had braces will need to wear a retainer when they’re done with treatment. A retainer prevents your teeth from shifting back into their old positions.
